It started
with Roy Rogers and Trigger
At six years of age, Doug saw a small guitar with Roy Rogers and Triggers
painted on it in a Western Auto catalog. He was mesmerized and knew
it would be his. With his dad’s help and collection of many eggs,
the guitar was his and his sojourn into Hawaiian slack key music began.
He made up his own tunings and songs.
Twenty
years later, A Merging of Paths
On my roommate’s guitar, Doug fiddled with the tuners and started
playing the most beautiful music I had ever heard. My heart sung. So
much for the doctor my mom had planned.
After a few years of working as a computer
scientist, I, with the help of Ray Kane, convinced Doug his purpose
in life was to be a traditional slack key guitar player. We are both
lifelong students of life’s mysteries. Together, we share
the music and stories, helping people to feel better and benefit from
the ancient Hawaiian wisdom of this music.
Family
Traditions and Doing the Work We Love
Slack key music is traditionally a family heirloom. It’s secrets
are revealed slowly over time, requiring dedication, focus, and discipline.
It’s an endangered art form. Given this incredible gift of music
and story that help people feel better, it is our kuleana (responsibility)
to ho’omau (continue the tradition).
7 Days
A Week
Every sunset, for years (2,256 days to be exact) we honored the tradition of serenading the sun to bed,
thanking the ancestors for their guidance, expressing gratitude for
another day on this paradise of earth, and sending the aloha of slack
key out to the world over the waves of Hanalei Bay. Aunty Edith and
surf dog Betty started us playing for sunsets and with their help we
realized this portion of our mission. We now share sunset at least once a week.
At least twice a week we share the music,
the stories, and the aloha in concerts set against the beautiful Hanalei
mountains, waterfalls, taro fields, rainbows, and fields of green. We’re
joined by many locals including roosters, meadowlarks, thrush, mynah,
gecko, horses, nosey white birds, and always the ancestors.
Through simple acts of aloha,
everyone has the power to
create happiness, healing, and well being...
for themselves... for others...
for their community... for the world!
In a nutshell,
through slack key music, stories, and the awesome nature of Hawaii
we create experiences of aloha.
We are dedicated to preserving, promoting,
and perpetuating the beautiful and rare instrumental fingerstyle guitar
artform called Hawaiian slack key or ki ho'alu. Ki Ho'alu means "to
loosen or slacken the keys".
